How to Write a UGC Creator Brief That Actually Gets Usable Footage

November 1, 2026 7 min read

You paid, the product shipped, and the footage arrives three days later: a shaky clip of someone talking at a camera with the box still on the desk. The creator followed the brief exactly — the brief was just empty. Here's how to fix it.

Start with the buyer, not the product

One paragraph: who this ad is for and what they're already frustrated with. A creator who understands the audience makes better on-camera choices than one following a shot list blindly. "Women who work at a desk and their necks ache by 3pm" is worth ten generic instructions.

Give them the hook, in their words

Provide two or three opening lines and ask for them in the creator's own phrasing. You keep the structure that converts, they keep the delivery that sounds human. Never ask for the script word-for-word — that's how ads start reading like ads.

Write a shot list, not a wish

List the specific visuals you need: hands unboxing, the product in use from two angles, a close-up of the key mechanism, a reaction shot, one before/after moment. Specify vertical framing, and say whether you need the clip clean (no text, no music) so you can edit it.

State the three things you cannot have

No medical or income claims, no competitor names, no showing the product doing something it doesn't do. Write it plainly in the brief. A creator who knows your red lines never wastes a take.

Set the technical basics up front

Vertical 9:16, natural light or a lamp, phone camera is fine, no filters, product label facing the lens, audio recorded in a quiet room. These small details decide whether the file is usable.

Be clear on usage and payment

Say what you're buying: the file, the right to run it as an ad, for how long, and on which platforms. State your revision policy — one round is normal. Ambiguity here is where most creator relationships break.
